What happens in this chapter

Narayani Stuti and the Devi's promise

With the great asura slain, the devas led by Agni praise Katyayani with faces bright with joy. Each verse ends with the refrain: salutations to you, Narayani. She is the shakti of Vishnu; she has the form of Brahmani, Maheshvari, Kaumari, Vaishnavi, Varahi, Narasimhi, Aindri and Chamunda. Here is the verse sung in every home: Sarva-mangala-mangalye, Shive, sarvartha-sadhike, auspicious of all that is auspicious, refuge of all, three-eyed Gauri. The Devi offers a boon. They ask that she always destroy their foes and the world's troubles. She foretells her coming forms: born to Yashoda as Vindhyavasini, as Raktadantika, Shatakshi, Shakambhari, Durga who slays Durgama, Bhima and Bhramari. Whenever the danavas bring trouble, I will descend and destroy the foe.
