What happens in this chapter I am alone here: Shumbha slain Seeing his brother dead, Shumbha taunts the Devi: proud of your strength, you fight by leaning on the strength of others. She answers: I am alone here in the world; who else is there besides me? See, wicked one, these are my own powers entering into me. Brahmani and all the Matrikas merge into her body, and Ambika stands alone. She breaks his bow, kills his charioteer and horses. He rises into the sky and they battle there; she hurls him to the ground and pierces his chest with her spear. When he falls, the earth with its oceans and mountains trembles, then grows calm. Rivers flow in their courses, gentle winds blow, the gandharvas sing.
