Meaning
1. On the ground made holy by the streams falling from the forest of his matted hair, with a great serpent hung like a garland round his neck, Shiva danced the fierce Tandava while his damaru sounded "damad damad damad". May that Shiva spread auspiciousness for us.
2. His head shines with the restless waves of the heavenly river whirling in the deep bowl of his matted locks; fire blazes "dhagad dhagad" on the plate of his forehead; the young moon is his crest. May my love for him grow every moment.
3. His mind delights in the playful grace of the daughter of the king of mountains, which lights up every quarter of the sky; a single stream of his kind glances stops the hardest troubles. May my mind find its joy in that Digambara, clad only in the directions.
4. The light of the jewels on the hoods of the tawny serpents in his hair paints the faces of the directions as if with saffron; he wears the hide of the mad elephant-demon as his upper cloth. May my mind take wondrous delight in him, the sustainer of all beings.
5. The footstool of his feet is grey with the pollen falling from the flowers on the crowns of Indra and all the devas who bow there; his matted hair is bound with the king of serpents. May he whose crest is the moon, friend of the chakora bird, grant lasting prosperity.
6. With a spark of the fire blazing in the square of his forehead he burnt up Kamadeva, the god of the five arrows, and the lord of the devas bows to him; the crescent of the nectar-rayed moon shines on his head. May that radiance, the bearer of the skull, with the river in his matted locks, be for our good fortune.
7. In the fire that flames "dhagad dhagad" on the fearsome plate of his forehead he offered Kamadeva as an oblation; he alone is the artist who draws the ornamental leaf-patterns on the person of the daughter of the mountain king. My love is for the three-eyed one.
8. His throat is dark as the thick night of the new moon closed in by fresh rain-clouds; he holds the heavenly river and wears the elephant's hide; the moon adorns him and he bears the weight of the world. May he spread prosperity.
9. His throat glows with the darkness of fully opened blue lotuses. I worship him who cut down Kama, the three cities, worldly bondage and Daksha's sacrifice, who slew the elephant-demon, Andhaka and Yama himself.
10. He is the bee drawn to the sweet flow of nectar from the blossoms of the arts of Sarvamangala, the all-auspicious Devi. I worship him, the ender of Kama, of the three cities, of worldly bondage, of the sacrifice, of the elephant-demon, of Andhaka, and of Death itself.
11. Victory to Shiva, on whose fearsome forehead the fire flares as the hissing serpents whirl in the vast sky; whose fierce Tandava keeps time to the deep, auspicious beat of the mridanga sounding "dhimid dhimid dhimid".
12. A stone bed or a fine couch, a serpent or a string of pearls, precious gems or a clod of earth, friend or foe, a blade of grass or lotus eyes, the common people or the emperor: when, looking on all of these alike, shall I worship Sadashiva?
13. When shall I live in a hollow among the bowers by the heavenly river, free of evil thoughts, my joined palms ever raised above my head, my restless eyes stilled, the mark on my forehead, chanting the mantra "Shiva", and be happy?
14. May the radiance of his limbs, made lovely by the honey dripping from the jasmine woven in the hair of the women of the devas, the highest abode of the highest glory, bring joy to our minds day and night.
15. May the sound "Shiva", the mantra that is an ornament, which spreads auspiciousness like the blaze of the undersea fire, which the maidens of the eight great siddhis call out, and which rang at the wedding of the lovely-eyed Devi, bring victory to the world.
16. Whoever daily reads, remembers or recites this finest of hymns is purified for ever, and quickly gains deep devotion to Hara, the guru; there is no other way. The mere thought of Shankara removes the delusion of embodied beings.
Phala: Whoever, at the close of worship on the evening of Pradosha, recites this hymn sung by the ten-headed one, given over to the worship of Shambhu, to him Shambhu grants lasting prosperity, with chariots, elephants and horses, at the moment of his grace.
About this bhajan
The closing verse calls this hymn "dashavaktra-gitam", sung by the ten-headed one, and the tradition holds that Ravana, a great devotee of Mahadev, poured it out at Kailash. The panchachamara metre runs in pairs of short and long syllables, so the lines move like a drumbeat: damad damad, dhimid dhimid. Recited at the close of Pradosha puja, it asks in its twelfth verse for a mind that sees a stone bed and a royal couch alike. Some printed editions omit verses 14 and 15; this text keeps them, as the Sanskrit Wikisource copy does.
