Meaning

Viniyoga: Of this Rama Raksha stotra-mantra the rishi is Budha Kaushika, the deity Shri Sita-Ramachandra, the metre anushtubh, the shakti Sita, the kilaka Shri Hanuman; it is recited for the pleasure of Shri Ramachandra.

Dhyana: Meditate on Ramachandra, his arms reaching to his knees, holding bow and arrows, seated in the lotus posture, wearing yellow cloth, his eyes rivalling fresh lotus petals, serene, his gaze meeting the lotus face of Sita seated on his left, dark as a rain cloud, shining with many ornaments, his great matted locks his crown.

1. The story of the Lord of the Raghus spreads over a hundred crore verses, and every single syllable of it destroys a person's gravest sins.

2–3. Meditating on Rama, dark as the blue lotus, lotus-eyed, with Janaki and Lakshmana, crowned with matted hair, holding sword, quiver, bow and arrow, destroyer of the night-wanderers, the unborn, all-pervading Lord who appeared by his own will to protect the world,

4. the wise should recite the Rama Raksha, which destroys sin and grants every wish. May Raghava protect my head, the son of Dasharatha my forehead,

5. Kausalya's son my eyes, Vishvamitra's beloved my ears, the protector of the sacrifice my nose, he who loves Lakshmana my mouth,

6. the treasury of learning my tongue, he whom Bharata bows to my throat, the bearer of divine weapons my shoulders, the breaker of Shiva's bow my arms,

7. Sita's lord my hands, the conqueror of Parashurama my heart, the slayer of Khara my middle, the refuge of Jambavan my navel,

8. the lord of Sugriva my hips, Hanuman's master my thighs, the best of the Raghus, destroyer of the rakshasa clan, my upper legs,

9. the builder of the bridge my knees, the slayer of the ten-headed one my shins, he who gave sovereignty to Vibhishana my feet. May Rama protect my whole body.

10. The fortunate one who recites this protection, filled with Rama's strength, will be long-lived, happy, blessed with children, victorious and humble.

11. Beings that roam the underworld, the earth and the sky, and those that move in disguise, cannot even look at one guarded by the names of Rama.

12. One who remembers "Rama", "Ramabhadra" or "Ramachandra" is not touched by sin, and gains both worldly joy and liberation.

13. Whoever wears on his throat this protection, guarded by Rama's name, the one mantra that conquers the world, holds every siddhi in his hand.

14. Whoever remembers this Rama Kavacha called the "Vajra-panjara", the diamond cage, has his word obeyed everywhere and gains victory and good fortune.

15. As Hara (Shiva) told this Rama Raksha in a dream, so Budha Kaushika wrote it down on waking in the morning.

16. He is the garden of wish-fulfilling trees, the end of all troubles, the delight of the three worlds: that glorious Rama is our Lord.

17–19. Young, handsome, tender yet mighty, with eyes wide as lotuses, wearing bark and black deerskin, living on fruit and roots, self-controlled, ascetics, brahmacharis, these two sons of Dasharatha, the brothers Rama and Lakshmana, refuge of all beings, foremost of all archers, destroyers of the rakshasa clan: may these two best of the Raghus protect us.

20. With bows strung, hands on their arrows, with quivers of unending arrows, may Rama and Lakshmana always walk ahead of me on the road to protect me.

21. Armed, armoured, bearing sword, bow and arrows, youthful, may Rama with Lakshmana, our heart's desire, go with us and protect us.

22–23. Rama, son of Dasharatha, the hero, followed by Lakshmana, the mighty, of Kakutstha's line, the complete Purusha, Kausalya's son, best of the Raghus, known through Vedanta, lord of sacrifice, the ancient Supreme Person, beloved of Janaki, glorious, of measureless valour:

24. my devotee who chants these names daily with faith gains merit greater than the ashvamedha, without doubt.

25. Those who praise with divine names Rama, dark as durva grass, lotus-eyed, clad in yellow, are no longer bound to worldly existence.

26. I bow to Rama, elder brother of Lakshmana, best of the Raghus, Sita's lord, beautiful, of Kakutstha's line, ocean of compassion, treasury of virtues, dear to the learned, righteous, king of kings, true to his word, son of Dasharatha, dark, the form of peace, delight of the world, jewel of the Raghu clan, Raghava, Ravana's foe.

27. Salutations to Rama, Ramabhadra, Ramachandra, the Creator, Lord of the Raghus, the Lord, the husband of Sita.

28. Shri Rama, Rama, joy of the Raghus; Shri Rama, Rama, Bharata's elder brother; Shri Rama, Rama, fierce in battle; Shri Rama, Rama, be my refuge.

29. I remember the feet of Shri Ramachandra with my mind, praise them with my speech, bow to them with my head, and take refuge in them.

30. Rama is my mother, Ramachandra my father; Rama is my master, Ramachandra my friend; compassionate Ramachandra is my all. I know no other, no, I know none other.

31. I bow to the joy of the Raghus, with Lakshmana on his right, Janaki on his left and Maruti before him.

32. I take refuge in Shri Ramachandra, delight of the world, steady on the battlefield, lotus-eyed, lord of the Raghu line, compassion in form, the doer of mercy.

33. I take refuge in the messenger of Shri Rama, swift as the mind, fast as the wind, master of his senses, foremost of the wise, son of the Wind, leader of the vanara hosts.

34. I bow to the cuckoo Valmiki who, perched on the branch of poetry, sings "Rama, Rama", sweet and of sweet syllables.

35. Again and again I bow to Shri Rama, remover of calamities, giver of every wealth, delight of the world.

36. The roar "Rama, Rama" roasts the seeds of rebirth, earns happiness and wealth, and drives off the messengers of Yama.

37. Rama, the jewel among kings, is ever victorious; I worship Rama, lord of Lakshmi; by Rama the night-wanderers' army was slain; to that Rama I bow. There is no refuge higher than Rama; I am Rama's servant. May my mind ever dissolve in Rama. O Rama, lift me up.

38. (Shiva to Parvati:) "Rama, Rama, Rama": O lovely one, I delight in Rama, the delightful. The name of Rama equals the thousand names.

About this bhajan

The fifteenth verse tells how this kavacha came to be: Hara, Bhagwan Shiva, recited it to the rishi Budha Kaushika in a dream, and he wrote it down when he woke. Families in Maharashtra, Karnataka and across the land say it at dusk, children first learning the body-verses, "shiro me Raghavah patu", where each limb is placed under one name of Rama. The last verses have become prayers in their own right: "Lokabhiramam ranarangadhiram", the Hanuman shloka "Manojavam", and the final line, which Shiva speaks to Parvati, that one name of Rama equals the thousand names of Vishnu.
