Meaning
If you are the mountain, I am the peacock. If you are the moon, I have become the chakora bird.
Madhava, if you do not break with me, I will not break with you. Breaking with you, with whom would I join?
If you are the lamp, I am the wick. If you are the place of pilgrimage, I am the pilgrim.
I have joined true love with you; joining with you, I have broken with all others.
Wherever I go, there I serve you. There is no other Lord or god like you.
Meditating on you, the noose of death is cut. For the sake of devotion Ravidas sings.
About this bhajan
A sister song to “Prabhu ji tum chandan”, built the same way but kept in the Guru Granth Sahib in raga Sorath. The refrain is a lover’s pact said to Madhava: you will not leave me, so I will not leave you, and where else could I go? Every pairing is a dependence the devotee is glad of, peacock on the mountain, chakora under the moon, wick in the lamp, pilgrim at the tirtha.
Sri Guru Granth Sahib, Raag Sorath, Bani Ravidas ji, ang 658–659 (Devanagari transliteration via BaniDB; the original is in Gurmukhi)
