Meaning
Beloved, who but you could do such a thing? Lord, cherisher of the poor, you have set a royal canopy over my head.
On the one whose very touch the world thinks polluting, you alone pour your mercy. My Gobind raises the low to the high and fears no one.
Namdev, Kabir, Trilochan, Sadhana and Sain crossed over. Ravidas says, listen, saints: through Hari everything is accomplished.
About this bhajan
Sant Ravidas’s shabads are in the Guru Granth Sahib, and this one in raga Maru is among the most sung. He speaks plainly of the scorn he met for his birth and of the Lord who set a king’s canopy over him all the same. The last stanza names fellow bhaktas from many backgrounds, Namdev the tailor, Kabir the weaver, Sain the barber, Sadhana the butcher, Trilochan the Brahmana, as proof that Hari’s grace looks at love alone.
Sri Guru Granth Sahib, Raag Maru, Bani Ravidas ji, ang 1106 (Devanagari transliteration via BaniDB; the original is in Gurmukhi)
