Meaning

Mighty of form, great Rudra, Hanuman with a body like the thunderbolt, Maruti; enemy of the asuras of the forest, son of Anjani, messenger of Rama, son of the Wind.

Of great strength, giver of life, who raised all by his power; bringer of happiness, remover of grief, wise one, Vaishnava, singer of the Lord’s praise.

Lord of the humble, form of Hari, beautiful one who dwells within the world; slayer of the spirits of the nether world, splendid one smeared with vermilion.

Lord of the worlds, Lord of the universe, Lord of life, ancient one; full of merit, of virtuous nature, purifier who delights others.

He raised his arm like a banner and rushed forward in fury; at the sight of him, fire of time, fire of Kalarudra, all tremble in fear.

It seemed the universes could not contain him as he clenched his rows of teeth; flames leapt from the fire of his eyes, his brows tightened with force.

His tail curled over his head, a crown and fine earrings on him; a golden loincloth at his waist, bells and tinkling ornaments, graceful.

Standing tall like a mountain, well-made and lean, quick of limb, seen vast like a great flash of lightning.

In leaps of millions upon millions he sprang to the north and in anger tore up by force the Drona mountain, huge as Mandara.

He brought it, took it back again, came and went at the speed of thought; he left even the mind behind; his speed has no equal.

From an atom he grows to the size of the universe; what can compare with him? Meru and Mandara are small beside him.

He can wind his own tail in coils around the universe; where is his equal? Search the universe and there is none.

Seeing the sun red, he swallowed the solar orb; growing and growing, he pierced the sphere of the void.

Ghosts, spirits and all disease and illness are destroyed, and worry is broken, by the joyful darshan of Bhima, the mighty one.

This earth-like garland of fifteen shlokas is gained and is beautiful; it makes the body strong and the mind free of doubt, as the moon’s sixteen phases make it full.

Foremost among Rama’s servants, ornament of the race of vanaras, whose inner self is Rama: by his darshan faults are destroyed.

About this bhajan

Samarth Ramdas saw Hanuman as the model of a strong and devoted life and set up Maruti shrines across the Krishna valley; the eleven Marutis he founded are still a pilgrimage circuit. This stotra is the first of his fourteen Maruti stotras. Maharashtrian boys learn it by heart and recite it in akhadas before wrestling practice, and the whole state recites it on Hanuman Jayanti. The phalashruti says fifteen shlokas; Wikisource numbers the closing verse as the sixteenth.
