The Mughal force sent out against him was routed at the gates of the capital, and Bajirao withdrew without entering the city.
01Round the armies
In 1737 Saadat Khan of Awadh boasted that he had driven the Marathas back across the Yamuna. Bajirao’s answer was to leave the Mughal armies behind him in the Doab and ride hard for Delhi. He reached the outskirts in late March. A force under Mir Hasan Khan Koka came out of the city and was beaten near Talkatora.
02Restraint
Bajirao did not sack the city. His aim was to force the emperor to grant Malwa, not to frighten the people, and he turned south as the big Mughal armies hurried back. The emperor’s answer was to call the Nizam north against him, which led to Bhopal.

The raid showed that the Mughal capital lay open to Maratha horse.
