01Born of a golden lotus

The Venkatachala Mahatmya tells that Lakshmi left Vaikuntha after Bhrigu’s insult to Vishnu, and Vishnu followed her to earth as Srinivasa. To find her, he did tapas for twelve years by the lake at Tiruchanur, and she rose from a golden lotus in the Padma Sarovaram as Padmavathi, Alamelu Manga, the lady of the lotus. She was raised as the daughter of the king Akasa Raja, and her wedding to Srinivasa, for which he borrowed wealth from Kubera, is the reason pilgrims still give to Tirumala. Every Friday the Devi receives abhishekam.

02Panchami Theertham

The Karthika Brahmotsavam of nine days ends on Shukla Panchami with the Panchami Theertham, when a gift of turmeric, saris and jewels comes down from Tirumala for the Devi and the Sudarshana Chakra is bathed in the Padma Sarovaram while lakhs bathe with it. The temple is run by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams. Inscriptions in the temple go back to the 10th century, when the village was called Tiruchukanur.
