01Yogamaya of Gokul

Devotees know Kaila Devi as the same Devi who was born to Nanda and Yashoda and exchanged for the infant Krishna; when Kansa tried to dash her against a stone she rose into the sky and told him his slayer was safe. That ties her to the Yaduvanshi Jadons of Karauli, who trace their line to Krishna. Beside her in the sanctum sits Chamunda. The temple faces the narrow Kalisil, and pilgrims bathe in the stream before climbing up.

02The lakkhi mela of Chaitra

In the month of Chaitra, around the Navratri, the valley fills for two weeks with pilgrims from Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, many walking from their villages with flags. Groups of men dance the languriya, singing to Languriya, the Devi’s attendant, and the songs are teasing and loud. Children are brought for their first haircut. The Karauli royal family still performs puja at the festival.

Visiting

The temple is about 23 km from Karauli town; Gangapur City and Hindaun City are the nearest railheads. The Chaitra fair is crowded, so plan stays ahead.
