01Three Ganeshas
In the sanctum sit Chintaman, who takes away worry, Ichchhaman, who grants what is wished, and Siddhivinayak, who gives success, all three swayambhu, with Riddhi and Siddhi at their sides. The temple’s katha says that Rama, Sita and Lakshmana, passing through Avantika in their exile, set up the three Ganeshas; when Sita was thirsty, Lakshmana shot an arrow into the ground and water came up, and the stepwell beside the temple is still called Lakshman Bawdi. The pillars of the hall are of old carved stone.
02Wednesdays of Chaitra
On every Wednesday of Chaitra a jatra is held and the road from Ujjain fills with carts and pilgrims. Malwa families bring the first wedding card here, and couples come after marriage for blessing. New crops, new shops and new account books all begin with a visit to Chintaman. The temple has its own small railway halt on the Ujjain–Fatehabad line.
The temple is about 7 km south-west of Ujjain across the Shipra; Chintaman Ganesh halt is next to it.
