Raghupati Sahay, the Urdu poet known as Firaq, is born at Gorakhpur. His Gul-e-Naghma wins the Jnanpith.
Capture of Haji Pir Pass
When Pakistan sent thousands of armed infiltrators into Kashmir in August 1965, the Indian Army struck at the pass they came through. Paratroopers climbed through the night in the rain and took Haji Pir from above.
