Yudhishthira asks, Bhishma answers

The recitation opens with invocation verses: Shuklambaradharam to the four-armed Vishnu who removes obstacles, a verse to Vishvaksena, and salutations to Vyasa, who is Vishnu in the form of Vyasa. Then Vaishampayana tells the setting. Having heard all the dharmas from Bhishma, Yudhishthira asks him six questions: who is the one deity in the world, the one highest refuge, by praising and worshipping whom men gain good, which dharma is the highest of all, and by reciting what a creature is freed from the bonds of birth and samsara. Bhishma answers that the highest dharma is to praise Vishnu, the lord of the world with his thousand names. He names the rishi, metre and deity of the hymn and begins.

1.1

śuklāmbaradharaṃ viṣṇuṃ śaśivarṇaṃ caturbhujam |
prasannavadanaṃ dhyāyet sarvavighnopaśāntaye

For the removal of every obstacle, one should meditate on Vishnu, clad in white, bright as the moon, four-armed, with a serene and smiling face.

1.2

vighnaṃ nighnanti satataṃ viṣvaksenaṃ tamāśraye

I take refuge in Vishvaksena, whose attendants, more than a hundred, led by the elephant-faced one, constantly destroy all obstacles.

1.3

I bow to Vyasa, great-grandson of Vasishtha, grandson of Shakti, son of Parashara and father of Shuka, the spotless one, a treasure of tapas.

1.4

namo vai brahmanidhaye vāsiṣṭhāya namo namaḥ

Salutations to Vyasa, who is a form of Vishnu, and to Vishnu, who is in the form of Vyasa. Salutations again and again to him of Vasishtha's line, the treasure-house of the Veda.

1.5

Salutations to Vishnu, the changeless, the pure, the eternal Supreme Self, ever of one unvarying form, victorious over all.

1.6

yasya smaraṇamātreṇa janmasaṃsārabandhanāt |
vimucyate namastasmai viṣṇave prabhaviṣṇave
oṃ namo viṣṇave prabhaviṣṇave |

Salutations to Vishnu, the all-powerful, by the mere remembrance of whom a person is freed from the bondage of birth and samsara. Om, salutations to Vishnu, the mighty Lord.

1.9

Which dharma, of all dharmas, do you hold to be the highest? By repeating what is a living being freed from the bondage of birth and samsara?
