Bhrigu Valli: Bhrigu learns Brahman from Varuna
Bhrigu, son of Varuna, goes to his father and says: teach me Brahman. Varuna gives the mark: that from which beings are born, by which they live, into which they return, seek to know that; it is Brahman. Varuna sends him to do tapas. Bhrigu returns again and again, each time with a deeper answer: Brahman is food, then breath, then mind, then understanding, and at last bliss, from which beings are born, live and return. This is the knowledge of Bhrigu and Varuna. Vows about food follow: do not despise food, do not refuse food, make much food, turn no one away. The valli ends with the sage's song: I am food, I am the eater of food.
Bhrigu, son of Varuna, went to his father Varuna and said: Teach me Brahman, revered sir. Varuna named for him food, prana, the eye, the ear, the mind and speech, and said: That from which these beings are born, by which once born they live, and into which they pass and merge at death, seek to know that. That is Brahman. Bhrigu performed tapas, and having performed it,
he came to know that food is Brahman. For from food these beings are born, by food they live, and into food they pass and merge. Knowing this, he went again to his father Varuna and said: Teach me Brahman, revered sir. Varuna said: Seek to know Brahman by tapas, for tapas is Brahman. He performed tapas, and having performed it,
he came to know that prana is Brahman. For from prana these beings are born, by prana they live, and into prana they pass and merge. Knowing this, he went again to his father Varuna: Teach me Brahman, revered sir. Varuna said: Seek to know Brahman by tapas, for tapas is Brahman. He performed tapas, and having performed it,
he came to know that mind is Brahman. For from mind these beings are born, by mind they live, and into mind they pass and merge. Knowing this, he went again to his father Varuna: Teach me Brahman, revered sir. Varuna said: Seek to know Brahman by tapas, for tapas is Brahman. He performed tapas, and having performed it,
he came to know that understanding, vijnana, is Brahman. For from understanding these beings are born, by understanding they live, and into understanding they pass and merge. Knowing this, he went again to his father Varuna: Teach me Brahman, revered sir. Varuna said: Seek to know Brahman by tapas, for tapas is Brahman. He performed tapas, and having performed it,
he came to know that bliss, ananda, is Brahman. For from bliss these beings are born, by bliss they live, and into bliss they pass and merge. This is the knowledge taught by Varuna and gained by Bhrigu, established in the highest space. Whoever knows this stands firm. He has food and the strength to enjoy it; he becomes great in offspring, cattle and the light of sacred learning, and great in fame.
annaṃ na nindyāt | tadvratam | prāṇo vā annam | śarīramannādam | prāṇe śarīraṃ pratiṣṭhitam | śarīre prāṇaḥ pratiṣṭhitaḥ | tadetadannamanne pratiṣṭhitam | sa ya etadannamanne pratiṣṭhitaṃ veda pratitiṣṭhati | annavānannādo bhavati | mahānbhavati prajayā paśubhirbrahmavarcasena mahān kīrtyā
Do not speak ill of food: that is the vow. Prana is food, the body is the eater of food. The body rests on prana, and prana rests on the body. So food rests on food. Whoever knows that food rests on food stands firm. He has food and the strength to enjoy it; he becomes great in offspring, cattle and sacred lustre, and great in fame.
Do not reject food: that is the vow. Water is food, fire is the eater of food. Fire rests on water, and water rests on fire. So food rests on food. Whoever knows that food rests on food stands firm. He has food and the strength to enjoy it; he becomes great in offspring, cattle and sacred lustre, and great in fame.
Make food plentiful: that is the vow. Earth is food, space is the eater of food. Space rests on earth, and earth rests on space. So food rests on food. Whoever knows that food rests on food stands firm. He has food and the strength to enjoy it; he becomes great in offspring, cattle and sacred lustre, and great in fame.
Turn no one away who comes to your house for shelter: that is the vow. So gather much food by whatever means, and tell the guest, food is ready for you. Food prepared and given at the start of life returns to the giver at the start; given in the middle, it returns in the middle; given at the end, it returns at the end.
for him who knows this. Brahman is to be worshipped as preservation in speech, as gaining and keeping in the in-breath and out-breath, as action in the hands, as movement in the feet, as release in the organ of excretion. These are the human meditations. Now the divine ones: as satisfaction in rain, as strength in lightning,
as fame in cattle, as light in the stars, as procreation, immortality and joy in the organ of generation, and as all in space. Worship it as the support, and one gains support. Worship it as the great, and one becomes great. Worship it as mind, and one becomes thoughtful.
Worship it as reverence, and desires bow down to him. Worship it as Brahman, and he possesses Brahman. Worship it as the dying-around of Brahman, and his hateful rivals die around him, and so do the kinsmen who wish him ill. He who is in man and he who is in the sun are one.

He who knows this, on leaving this world, passes through the self made of food, the self made of prana, the self made of mind, the self made of understanding and the self made of bliss. Then he moves through these worlds, eating what he wishes and taking what form he wishes, and sits singing this chant: Ha-a-vu, ha-a-vu, ha-a-vu!

I am food, I am food, I am food! I am the eater of food, the eater of food, the eater of food! I am the maker of the verse, I am the maker of the verse! I am the first-born of the cosmic order, before the devas, the navel of immortality. Whoever gives me, he indeed saves me. I, food, eat the eater of food. I have overcome the whole world. My light is golden like the sun. He who knows this attains all this. Such is the Upanishad. Om. May He protect us both, nourish us both; may we work together with vigour; may our study be bright; may we not hate each other.

OR, THE CHAPTER OF BHRIGU.
Harih, Om! May it (the Brahman) protect us both! May it enjoy us both! May we acquire strength together! May our knowledge become bright! May we never quarrel! Peace! peace! peace!
First Anuvaka
Bhrigu Varuni went to his father Varuna, saying: 'Sir, teach me Brahman.' He told him this, viz. Food, breath, the eye, the ear, mind, speech.
Then he said again to him: 'That from whence these beings are born, that by which, when born, they live, that into which they enter at their death, try to know that. That is Brahman.'
He performed penance. Having performed penance-
Second Anuvaka
He perceived that food is Brahman, for from food these beings are produced; by food, when born, they live; and into food they enter at their death.
Having perceived this, he went again to his father Varuna, saying: 'Sir, teach me Brahman.' He said to him: 'Try to know Brahman by penance, for penance is (the means of knowing) Brahman.'
He performed penance. Having performed penance-
Third Anuvaka
He perceived that breath is Brahman, for from breath these beings are born; by breath, when born, they live; into breath they enter at their death.
Having perceived this, he went again to his father Varuna, saying: 'Sir, teach me Brahman.' He said to him: 'Try to know Brahman by penance, for penance is (the means of knowing) Brahman.'
He performed penance. Having performed penance-
Fourth Anuvaku
He perceived that mind (manas) is Brahman, for from mind these beings are born; by mind, when born, they live; into mind they enter at their death.
Having perceived this, he went again to his father Varuna, saying: 'Sir, teach me Brahman.' He said to him: 'Try to know Brahman by penance, for penance is (the means of knowing) Brahman.'
He performed penance. Having performed penance-
Fifth Anuvaka
He perceived that understanding (vignana) was Brahman, for from understanding these beings are born; by understanding, when born, they live; into understanding they enter at their death.
Having perceived this, he went again to his father Varuna, saying: 'Sir, teach me Brahman.' He said to him: 'Try to know Brahman by penance, for penance is (the means of knowing) Brahman.'
He performed penance. Having performed penance-
Sixth Anuvaka
He perceived that bliss is Brahman, for from bliss these beings are born ; by bliss, when born, they live; into bliss they enter at their death.
This is the knowledge of Bhrigu and Varuna, exalted in the highest heaven (in the heart). He who knows this becomes exalted, becomes rich in food, and able to eat food (healthy), becomes great by offspring, cattle, and the splendour of his knowledge (of Brahman), great by fame.
Seventh Anuvaka
Let him never abuse food, that is the rule.
Breath is food', the body eats the food. The body rests on breath, breath rests on the body. This is the food resting on food. He who knows this food resting on food, rests exalted, becomes rich in food, and able to eat food (healthy), becomes great by offspring, cattle, and the splendour of his knowledge (of Brahman), great by fame.
Eight Anuvaka
Let him never shun food, that is the rule. Water is food, the light eats the food. The light rests on water, water rests on light. This is the food resting on food. He who knows this food resting on food, rests exalted, becomes rich in food, and able to eat food (healthy), becomes great by offspring, cattle, and the splendour of his knowledge (of Brahman), great by fame.
Ninth Anuvaka
Let him acquire much food, that is the rule. Earth is food, the ether eats the food. The ether rests on the earth, the earth rests on the ether. This is the food resting on food. He who knows this food resting on food, rests exalted, becomes rich in food, and able to eat food (healthy), becomes great by offspring, cattle, and the splendour of his knowledge (of Brahman), great by fame.
Tenth Anuvaka
1. Let him never turn away (a stranger) from his house, that is the rule. Therefore a man should by all means acquire much food, for (good) people say (to the stranger): 'There is food ready for him.' If he gives food amply, food is given to him amply. If he gives food fairly, food is given to him fairly. If he gives food meanly, food is given to him meanly.
2. He who knows this, (recognises and worships Brahman) as possession in speech, as acquisition and possession in up-breathing (prana) and down-breathing (apana); as action in the hands; as walking in the feet; as voiding in the anus. These are the human recognitions (of Brahman as manifested in human actions). Next follow the recognitions (of Brahman) with reference to the Devas, viz. as satisfaction in rain; as power in lightning;
3. As glory in cattle; as light in the stars; as procreation, immortality, and bliss in the member; as everything in the ether. Let him worship that (Brahman) as support, and he becomes supported. Let him worship that (Brahman) as greatness (mahah), and he becomes great. Let him worship that (Brahman) as mind, and he becomes endowed with mind.
4. Let him worship that (Brahman) as adoration, and all desires fall down before him in adoration. Let him worship that (Brahman) as Brahman, and he will become possessed of Brahman. Let him worship this as the absorption of the gods in Brahman, and the enemies who hate him will die all around him, all around him will die the foes whom he does not love.
He who is this (Brahman) in man, and he who is that (Brahman) in the sun, both are one.
5. He who knows this, when he has departed this world, after reaching and comprehending the Self which consists of food, the Self which consists of breath, the Self which consists of mind, the Self which consists of understanding, the Self which consists of bliss, enters and takes possession of these worlds, and having as much food as he likes, and assuming as many forms as he likes, he sits down singing this Saman (of Brahman): 'Havu, havu, havu!
6. 'I am food (object), I am food, I am food! I am the eater of food (subject), I am the eater of food, I am the eater of food! I am the poet (who joins the two together), I am the poet, I am the poet! I am the first-born of the Right (rita). Before the Devas I was in the centre of all that is immortal. He who gives me away, he alone preserves me: him who cats food, I eat as food.
