What happens in this chapter

Be our nearest friend, Agni

This short hymn in dvipada virat is ascribed to Bandhu, Subandhu, Shrutabandhu and Viprabandhu, sons of Gopayana or Lopayana. Each two-line mantra is a direct, intimate plea to Agni. Be our nearest, our protector, kind and sheltering. Agni is good and famed for goods; come to us and give the most splendid wealth. Wake for us, hear our call, guard us from every one who plans harm. Most brilliant, shining one, we beg you now for grace for our friends. The hymn is brief and personal, the voice of a family asking its household fire to stay close.
