Usha, mother of the cows

Seven gayatri verses of Vamadeva Gautama to Usha. The bountiful lady, daughter of heaven, has appeared, shining after her sister, Night. Bright like a mare, mother of the cows, true to rita, Usha has become the friend of the Ashvins. You are the Ashvins' friend, the cows' mother, and you rule over wealth. We have woken with praises to you who drive away enmity. Your blessed rays have appeared like cattle let loose; Usha has filled the wide space. Filling all, radiant one, you have uncovered the darkness with light. You spread heaven and the dear mid-air with your rays, Usha, with your bright flame.

प्रति॒ ष्या सू॒नरी॒ जनी॑ व्यु॒च्छन्ती॒ परि॒ स्वसु॑ः ।
दि॒वो अ॑दर्शि दुहि॒ता

prati ṣyā sūnarī janī vyucchantī pari svasuḥ |
divo adarśi duhitā

अश्वे॑व चि॒त्रारु॑षी मा॒ता गवा॑मृ॒ताव॑री ।
सखा॑भूद॒श्विनो॑रु॒षाः

aśveva citrāruṣī mātā gavāmṛtāvarī |
sakhābhūdaśvinoruṣāḥ

उ॒त सखा॑स्य॒श्विनो॑रु॒त मा॒ता गवा॑मसि ।
उ॒तोषो॒ वस्व॑ ईशिषे

uta sakhāsyaśvinoruta mātā gavāmasi |
utoṣo vasva īśiṣe

या॒व॒यद्द्वे॑षसं त्वा चिकि॒त्वित्सू॑नृतावरि ।
प्रति॒ स्तोमै॑रभुत्स्महि

yāvayaddveṣasaṃ tvā cikitvitsūnṛtāvari |
prati stomairabhutsmahi
