Dadhikra and the Hamsa seated in light

Vamadeva Gautama praises Dadhikra in jagati with a trishtubh opening, the last verse going to Surya. Let us honour Dadhikra, and may all the dawns quicken us. He is true, swift, a flier, bringing food, strength and light. The wind follows him as it follows a bird's wing; bound at neck, flank and mouth, he speeds along the bends of the path. The last verse is famous, later taken into the Katha Upanishad: the Hamsa sits in the bright sky, the Vasu in mid-air, the hotar at the altar, the guest in the house, born of water, of cows, of rita, of the mountain; he is Rita.
