Narada teaches the nature of supreme love

Devarshi Narada begins: now we shall explain bhakti. It is supreme love for Bhagwan, nectar in its very nature; gaining it, a person becomes fulfilled, immortal and content. It is free of desire because it is the giving up of all worldly and Vedic activity to Him. Narada gives his own mark after those of Vyasa, Garga and Shandilya: offering every act to Bhagwan and feeling the deepest anguish on forgetting Him, as the gopis of Vraja did. Bhakti is higher than karma, jnana and yoga, being itself the fruit. It is gained by renunciation and unbroken worship, and above all by the grace of great souls. True devotees purify the earth; caste, learning and wealth make no difference among them. Bhakti takes eleven forms of attachment.

1.1

athāto bhaktiṃ vyākhyāsyāmaḥ

Now, therefore, we shall explain bhakti, devotion to Bhagwan.

1.2

sā tvasmin paramapremarūpā

Bhakti is supreme love for Him, love whose object is Bhagwan alone.

1.3

amṛtasvarūpā ca

And it is of the nature of amrita, the nectar of immortality.

1.4

yallabdhvā pumānsiddho bhavatyamṛto bhavati tṛpto bhavati

Gaining it, a person becomes perfected, becomes immortal and becomes fully content.

1.5

yatprāpya nā kiñcidvāñchati na śocati na dveṣṭi na ramate notsāhī bhavati

Having attained it, one desires nothing, grieves for nothing, hates nothing, delights in nothing else and strives for no worldly gain.

1.6

yajjñātvā matto bhavati stabdho bhavatyātmārāmo bhavati

Knowing it, one becomes intoxicated with love, becomes still, and delights in the Atman alone.

1.7

sā na kāmayamānā nirodharūpatvāt

Bhakti is not the fulfilment of desire, because its nature is nirodha, the laying aside of all else.

1.8

nirodhastu lokavedavyāpāranyāsaḥ

Nirodha means giving over all worldly and Vedic activity to Bhagwan, doing nothing for one's own sake.

1.9

tasminnananyatā tadvirodhiṣūdāsīnatā ca

It also means single-minded devotion to Him and indifference to whatever opposes Him.

1.10

anyāśrayāṇāṃ tyāgo'nanyatā

Single-mindedness means giving up every other refuge and leaning on Bhagwan alone.

1.11

lokavedeṣu tadanukūlācaraṇaṃ tadvirodhiṣūdāsīnatā ca

Indifference to what opposes Him means doing, in worldly and Vedic life, only what is in keeping with devotion.

1.12

bhavatu niścayadāḍhyādūrdhvaṃ śāstrarakṣaṇam

Even after one's resolve is firm, the injunctions of the shastra should be kept.

1.13

anyathā pātityaśaṅkayā

Otherwise there is the danger of falling from the path.

1.14

loko'pi tāvadeva bhojanādivyāpārastvāśarīradhāraṇāvadhi

Worldly duties too are to be kept up in the same measure, and eating and the like for as long as the body lasts.

1.15

tallakṣaṇāni vācyante nānāmatabhedāt

Now the marks of bhakti are described, for different teachers hold different views.

1.16

pūjādiṣvanurāga iti pārāśaryaḥ

Vyasa, son of Parashara, says bhakti is loving attachment to worship and the like.

1.17

kathādiṣviti gargaḥ

Garga says it is love for hearing and telling the kathas of Bhagwan.

1.18

ātmaratyavirodheneti śāṇḍilyaḥ

Shandilya says it is love that does not conflict with delight in the Atman.

1.19

nāradastu tadarpitākhilācāratā tadvismaraṇe paramavyākulateti

But Narada says bhakti is offering every act to Bhagwan and feeling utmost anguish if He is forgotten even for a moment.

1.20

astyevamevam

Such bhakti does exist, exactly as described; it is no mere ideal.

1.21

yathā vrajagopikānām

As it was in the gopis of Vraja, whose love for Shri Krishna is the example.

1.22

tatrāpi na māhātmyajñānavismṛtyapavādaḥ

Even there, it cannot be said that they forgot His greatness; they knew Him as Bhagwan.

1.23

tadvihīnaṃ jārāṇāmiva

Love without that knowledge of His greatness would be like the passion of a paramour.

1.24

nāstyeva tasmiṃstatsukhasukhitvam

In such passion there is no joy in the joy of the Beloved; it seeks only its own pleasure.

1.25

sā tu karmajñānayogebhyo'pyadhikatarā

Bhakti is greater even than karma, jnana and yoga.

rājagṛhabhojanādiṣu tathaiva dṛṣṭatvāt

For so it is seen with a palace, a meal and the like: knowing about them is not having them.

1.32

Knowing about a king does not please the king, nor does knowing about food remove hunger.
