Om and the four states of the Self

All this is the syllable Om: past, present and future are Om, and what lies beyond the three times is Om as well. All this is Brahman; this Self is Brahman, and it has four quarters. The first is Vaishvanara, the waking state, knowing outward and enjoying the gross. The second is Taijasa, the dream state, knowing inward and enjoying the subtle. The third is Prajna, deep sleep, where nothing is desired and no dream is seen, a mass of awareness made of bliss, lord of all. The fourth is neither inward nor outward knowing, ungraspable, the stilling of the world, peaceful, auspicious, one without a second: that is the Self to be known. The letters A, U and M match the first three; the fourth is measureless.

omityetadakṣaramidam̐sarvaṃ tasyopavyākhyānabhūtaṃ bhavad bhaviṣyaditi sarvamoṅkāra eva |
yaccānyat trikālātītaṃ tadapyoṅkāra eva

Om: this syllable is all this. Here is its explanation. What was, what is and what will be, all is Om alone. And whatever else lies beyond the three times, that too is Om.

1.2

sarvaṃ hyetad brahmāyamātmā brahma so'yamātmā catuṣpāt

All this is Brahman. This Self is Brahman. This Self has four quarters.

1.3

jāgaritasthāno bahiḥprajñaḥ saptāṅga ekonaviṃśatimukhaḥ sthūlabhugvaiśvānaraḥ prathamaḥ pādaḥ

The first quarter is Vaishvanara, whose field is waking. Knowing outward, with seven limbs and nineteen mouths, he enjoys gross objects.

1.4

svapnasthāno'ntaḥprajñaḥ saptāṅga ekonaviṃśatimukhaḥ praviviktabhuktaijaso dvitīyaḥ pādaḥ

The second quarter is Taijasa, the shining one, whose field is dream. Knowing inward, with seven limbs and nineteen mouths, he enjoys subtle objects.

1.5

yatra supto na kañcana kāmaṃ kāmayate na kañcana svapnaṃ paśyati tat suṣuptam |
suṣuptasthāna ekībhūtaḥ prajñānaghana evānandamayo hyānandabhuk cetomukhaḥ prājñastṛtīyaḥ pādaḥ

Where the sleeper desires nothing and sees no dream, that is deep sleep. The third quarter is Prajna, whose field is deep sleep: become one, a mass of knowing, made of bliss, enjoying bliss, with consciousness as his door.

1.6

eṣa sarveśvara eṣa sarvajña eṣo'ntaryāmyeṣa yoniḥ sarvasya prabhavāpyayau hi bhūtānām

He is the lord of all, the knower of all, the inner controller, the source of all. He is the origin and the dissolution of beings.

1.7

nāntaḥprajñaṃ na bahiṣprajñaṃ nobhayataḥprajñaṃ na prajñānaghanaṃ na prajñaṃ nāprajñam |
adṛṣṭamavyavahāryamagrāhyamalakṣaṇaṃ acintyamavyapadeśyamekātmapratyayāsāraṃ prapañcopaśamaṃ śāntaṃ śivamadvaitaṃ caturthaṃ manyante sa ātmā sa vijñeyaḥ

Not knowing inward, not knowing outward, not knowing both ways, not a mass of knowing, neither knowing nor unknowing; unseen, beyond dealings, ungraspable, without marks, unthinkable, indescribable, its essence the one Self, where the world ceases, peaceful, auspicious, non-dual: this they hold to be the fourth. That is the Self; that is to be known.

1.8

so'yamātmādhyakṣaramoṅkaro'dhimātraṃ pādā mātrā mātrāśca pādā akāra ukāro makāra iti

This Self, taken as a syllable, is Om; taken by its measures, the quarters are the measures and the measures the quarters: A, U and M.

1.9

jāgaritasthāno vaiśvānaro'kāraḥ prathamā mātrā''pterādimattvādvā''pnoti ha vai sarvān kāmānādiśca bhavati ya evaṃ veda

Vaishvanara, whose field is waking, is A, the first measure, because A pervades all sounds and comes first. He who knows this attains all desires and becomes first.

1.10

svapnasthānastaijasa ukāro dvitīyā mātrotkarṣāt ubhayatvādvotkarṣati ha vai jñānasantatiṃ samānaśca bhavati nāsyā'brahmavitkule bhavati ya evaṃ veda

Taijasa, whose field is dream, is U, the second measure, because it is higher and stands between the two. He who knows this raises the line of knowledge and is held equal by all; in his family none is born who does not know Brahman.

1.11

suṣuptasthānaḥ prājño makārastṛtīyā mātrā miterapītervā minoti ha vā idaṃ sarvamapītiśca bhavati ya evaṃ veda

Prajna, whose field is deep sleep, is M, the third measure, because it measures all and all merges in it. He who knows this measures all this and becomes the place where all merges.

1.12

amātraścaturtho'vyavahāryaḥ prapañcopaśamaḥ śivo'dvaita evamoṅkāra ātmaiva saṃviśatyātmanā''tmānaṃ ya evaṃ veda

The fourth is without measure, beyond all dealings, where the world ceases, auspicious and non-dual. So Om is the Self itself. He who knows this enters the Self by the Self.
