Brahman once won a victory for the devas. In that victory of Brahman the devas grew proud and exalted.
12 verses · 3 of 4
Brahman won a victory for the devas, and they grew proud, thinking the glory was their own. Brahman saw their pride and appeared before them as a Yaksha they could not recognise. They sent Agni to learn who it was. Agni boasted he could burn all that is on earth; the Yaksha set down a single blade of grass, and Agni could not burn it. Vayu boasted he could carry off everything; he could not stir the straw. Then Indra himself went forward, and the Yaksha vanished. In that same sky Indra met a woman of great radiance, Uma Haimavati, daughter of the Himalaya, and asked her what that Yaksha was.
