Vidruma: coral and the close of gems

Suta says that Shesha took the entrails of Bala and cast them in Kerala and nearby lands, and there corals of great merit are born. The best coral is red like a hare's blood, or like the gunja seed and the japa flower. Sunilaka, Devaka and Romaka are named as places where coral of fine colour comes forth. Coral born elsewhere is not of the first rank, and its price depends on the craftsman's skill. Good coral is clear, soft, smooth and of a fine red. It brings wealth and grain and destroys the fear of poison and affliction. The last verse sums up for Shaunaka that the tests of pulaka, rudhiraksha, sphatika and coral are now told, closing the account of gems begun with the diamond.
