The Akhanda Dvadashi vrata

Brahma gives the Akhanda Dvadashi, the vow that makes every other vow whole. In the bright fortnight of Margashirsha the devotee fasts, living on the products of the cow, and on dvadashi worships Vishnu. The vow runs for four months at a time. He gives a brahmin a vessel filled with five kinds of grain and prays: whatever vow I have kept over seven births, O Vishnu, by your grace may it now be unbroken; as you, Purushottama, are the whole and unbroken world, so may all my vows be whole. In the four months from Chaitra he gives vessels of barley flour, and in the four from Shravana vessels with ghee. One who completes the vow gains a wife, sons and svarga.
