What happens in this chapter

The Matrikas and the slaying of Raktabija

Shumbha sends out every clan of the asuras. To meet them, the shaktis of the devas come forth from their bodies: Brahmani on a swan-drawn car, Maheshvari on a bull, Kaumari on a peacock, Vaishnavi on Garuda, Varahi, Narasimhi, and Aindri on an elephant. From Chandika herself comes a fierce Shakti who sends Shiva as her messenger to the asuras, and so is named Shivaduti. The Matrikas rout the army. Then Raktabija fights: from every drop of his blood that touches the earth springs another asura like him, until the world fills with them. Chandika tells Kali to open her mouth wide and drink every drop. Kali drinks the blood and devours the new-born asuras, and Raktabija, drained, falls. The Matrikas dance in triumph.
