Meaning
1. “Lord of Deivanai, whose lovely smile is a row of pearls, the maiden raised by the elephant Airavata; holder of the Shakti spear; Saravana; Guru who is the one seed of liberation”: so the three-eyed Supreme Lord hailed you,
2. when you taught him the meaning of what stands before the Vedas, the Pranava; and Brahma and Vishnu and the thirty-three orders of devas worship your feet.
3. He who loosed the arrows that scattered the ten heads, who churned the ocean with a single mountain as his rod, who with his round discus turned broad daylight into night,
4. who drove the chariot for his devotee: the one dark-green as a rain cloud, Vishnu himself, praises you as the worthy one. Will there come a day when you guard me with your love?
5. With feet set in the dance, anklets ringing “thith thith theya”, Bhairavi dances in every direction while vultures and ghouls dance with her,
6. and the eight Bhairavas at the quarters sound the measure “thokku thoku thokku thokuthoku”, and “trigadaga”, as in a picture,
7. and the war-drums beat on the battlefield, and the old owl calls “kukku kuku kukku kukukuku, pierce, bury, enter, seize”,
8. and rises from its hollow: you who cut down the asuras who broke faith and made them an offering, and fought until the great mountain Krauncha was pierced, O Perumal, great Lord!
About this bhajan
Arunagirinathar of Tiruvannamalai sang the Thiruppugazh, songs in which the rhythm is built into the words themselves; the tala syllables that head each song in the old editions give the beat. Tradition says Murugan himself gave him the first words, “muthai tharu”, when he was saved from death at the Tiruvannamalai temple tower. In the standard numbering this is song 6, the first after five invocations. The second half is a battle scene sung in sound, owls, drums and Bhairavas, and the song ends, as nearly every Thiruppugazh does, on the word Perumal.
