Meaning

1–5. Hail Namasivaya! Hail the feet of the Lord. Hail the feet of him who never leaves my heart even for the blink of an eye. Hail the feet of the jewel of a Guru who took me as his own at Kokazhi. Hail the feet of him who stands as the Agamas and draws near in sweetness. Hail the feet of the Lord who is One and also many.

6–10. Victory to the feet of the king who stilled my restless haste and ruled me. Victory to the anklet-feet of Pinnakan, who cuts off rebirth. Victory to the flower-feet of him who is far from those who stand outside. Victory to the feet of the king who rejoices within those who fold their hands. Victory to the feet of the glorious one who raises those who bow their heads.

11–16. Praise to the feet of Isha, praise to the feet of my father. Praise to the feet of the radiant one, praise to the red feet of Shiva. Praise to the feet of the spotless one who stands in love. Praise to the feet of the king who cuts off the birth that is illusion. Praise to the feet of our God of glorious Perunturai. Praise to the mountain that grants a bliss that never ends.

17–20. Because Shiva stands within my thought, by his grace I bow to his feet, and so that my mind may rejoice and all my former karma may cease, I shall tell the Sivapuranam.

About this bhajan

Manikkavasagar was a minister of the Pandya king. Sent to buy horses, he met Shiva in the form of a Guru under a kurunda tree at Tiruperunturai, also called Kokazhi, gave the king’s gold to the temple, and became a devotee for life. Tamil Shaivas say that “for one who is not moved by the Tiruvasagam, nothing will move him”. The Sivapuranam is its first hymn, ninety-five lines in all; these are the first twenty, which many recite every morning. Line 5, “One and also many”, and line 18, “by his grace I bow to his feet”, are among the most quoted lines in Tamil devotion.
