Ses Ganes Mahes Dines

Raskhanc. 1548 – c. 1628

Meaning

He whom Shesha, Ganesha, Mahesha, the Sun and Indra sing of without end; whom the Vedas call without beginning, without end, undivided, unpierceable and indivisible;

whom Narada, Shuka and Vyasa repeat and repeat, wearing themselves out and still never finding his limit: him the little cowherd girls make dance for a cupful of buttermilk.

About this bhajan

Three lines build up the Lord as the Vedas and the devas know him, beyond all description, and the fourth line knocks it all over: Ahir girls make him dance for a little buttermilk. That one contrast is the whole of Braj bhakti, the infinite caught by love that asks nothing. Raskhan’s savaiyas, with their easy flow and village Braj, are among the most recited verses of Krishna poetry, and this one is heard at Holi and raas gatherings in Vrindavan.
