Meaning
Pallavi: Has your word become gold, O Kodandapani, that you will not spend it?
1. Has a word from you become gold? Why do you not answer when I call? Even in dreams I do not forget to remember your name, my handsome father.
2. I have trusted fully that you showed mercy and saved the squirrel for its devotion, as it rolled in the sand by the shore, my father.
3. With love I have trusted that you turned a stone into a woman and won great fame upon the earth, my father.
4. However much I plead, not even a little pity comes to you. Who am I to set my will against yours, my father?
5. Are you not the one who bears the title ‘Protector of those who take refuge’? Have mercy, noble Lord of Bhadrachala, sustainer of Ramadasa.
About this bhajan
Kancherla Gopanna was a tahsildar under the Qutb Shahi court of Golconda who spent revenue money rebuilding the Rama temple at Bhadrachalam on the Godavari, and was imprisoned for it. The keertanas he sang in his cell are the songs of a man who has given everything and hears no answer. Tradition says Rama and Lakshmana came to Sultan Abul Hasan Tana Shah disguised as servants and paid back the money in gold coins, and Gopanna was freed. Paluke Bangaramayena is the gentlest of his complaints: has a single word from you become so precious, like gold, that you will not spare it? Sung in Ananda Bhairavi, it is heard every Rama Navami at Bhadrachalam during the Sita-Rama Kalyanam.
