About this bhajan
The second song of the Gita Govinda follows straight on from the Dashavatara, and it is the one crowds join in, because of its refrain "jaya jaya deva Hare". Every couplet strings together names of Hari: the Krishna of Gokul who humbled Kaliya, the Rama who conquered Ravana, the Kurma who bore Mount Mandara, the Narayana who rests on Lakshmi's heart. Odissi dancers learn it early, and at the Jagannath temple of Puri the Gita Govinda has been sung before the deity for centuries.
