Kootrayina Varu (Appar, Tevaram 4.1.1)

Appar (Tirunavukkarasar)Appar (Tirunavukkarasar)7th century CE

Meaning

You have not turned away this thing that has come on me like death. I do not know the many wrongs I have done. Night and day, never parting from them, I bow at all times at the feet of you who ride the bull. Unseen, inside my belly, it twists and knots my entrails; I cannot bear it, I your servant, O Lord who dwells at Virattanam in Atikai on the Kedilam.

About this bhajan

Tirunavukkarasar, whom Sambandar lovingly called Appar, father, had left the Shaiva path of his family as a young man. The Periya Puranam tells that a burning colic fell on him which no remedy could ease, and he came home to his elder sister Tilakavati at Tiruvatikai. She gave him holy ash and the Panchakshara, and he went into the Virattanam temple and sang this padigam. The pain left him. It is his first hymn and stands at the head of the fourth Tirumurai, and the oduvars still sing it as the prayer of a man who has nowhere else to turn.
