Meaning

Pallavi: I meditate on Raghurama, a garden of noble virtues.

Anupallavi: Shining with the play of side-glances eager to bestow blessings on the devout.

1 (Bala Kanda): Ornament of the solar race; who guarded the holy yajna of Vishvamitra, son of Gadhi, and slew Subahu and the others; who purified Ahalya; sinless; who broke Shiva’s bow; Lord of the life of Janaka’s daughter; who humbled the pride of the furious Parashurama and reached Saketa.
2 (Ayodhya Kanda): Whose coronation was stopped, and who then went to the forest at his father’s word with Sita and Lakshmana, most calm in nature; who went to Guha’s home; who gave his noble jewelled sandals to Bharata when he came to Chitrakuta; whose limbs are lovelier than Manmatha’s.
3 (Aranya Kanda): Who entered the wide Dandaka forest and slew Viradha; who received the matchless Vaishnava weapon from Agastya, born of a pot, of noble conduct; praised by Jatayu, best of birds; who made his home at Panchavati; who slew Khara and others who came at the word of the dreadful Shurpanakha.
4 (Kishkindha Kanda): Who slew the wicked Maricha who had taken the form of a golden deer; who searched for Janaka’s daughter, carried off by ten-headed Ravana, enemy of the good; sinless; who made friendship with Sugriva, son of the Sun, meeting Hanuman on the bank of the Pampa; the Lord who destroyed Vali’s body.
5 (Sundara Kanda): Whose jewelled ring, bright as a hundred suns, was placed by him in the hand of Hanuman, son of the Wind, best of vanaras; who saw the crest jewel he brought back; abode of Lakshmi, who on the shore of the ocean met Vibhishana when he sought refuge.
6 (Yuddha Kanda): Who built the great bridge, slew the countless wicked flesh-eaters and tore apart mighty ten-throated Ravana, most steadfast; who returned to Saketa with Janaka’s daughter, purified by fire; whose coronation shone in splendour; protector of the universe; Padmanabha.

About this bhajan

Swathi Thirunal Rama Varma (1813–1846), Maharaja of Travancore, ruled in the name of Shri Padmanabha, as his house had done since Marthanda Varma dedicated the kingdom to the deity in 1750, and he signs his songs ‘Padmanabha’. In Bhavayami Raghuramam he tells the whole Ramayana in six charanams, one for each kanda from Bala to Yuddha, in dense Sanskrit compounds. Today it is sung as a ragamalika, the raga changing with each kanda, so that the listener hears the story move. It ends with the coronation and the name of Padmanabha, and many singers close a Rama Navami concert with it.
