The Residency garrison was relieved in November 1857 and Campbell took Lucknow in March 1858.

01Chinhat and the Residency

On 30 June 1857 Sir Henry Lawrence marched out to meet the rebel army at Chinhat and was beaten back. The British and loyal sepoys shut themselves into the Residency compound, with women and children. Lawrence was killed by a shell on 4 July. Begum Hazrat Mahal, wife of the deposed Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, proclaimed her young son Birjis Qadr ruler, and talukdars and peasants of Awadh rallied to her. Havelock and Outram fought their way in on 25 September, but could only reinforce the garrison. Campbell broke through and brought it out in mid-November.

02The fall of Lucknow

Campbell returned in March 1858 with a large army and took Lucknow palace by palace, the Sikandar Bagh, the Kaiserbagh and the rest, by 21 March. Begum Hazrat Mahal refused the Queen’s proclamation, issued her own answer to it, and went to Nepal, where she died in 1879. The broken walls of the Residency still stand, kept as the shells left them.

Why it matters

Awadh fought as a whole people, peasants and talukdars together, and held out longer than any other region of the rising.
