What happens in this chapter
Shatakratu called to slay Vritra
Eleven short verses of Vishvamitra to Indra, gayatri with a closing anushtubh. The singers turn Indra toward them for the might that slays Vritra and overcomes armies. They ask that his mind and eye turn toward them, Shatakratu, the one of a hundred powers, and seek his names with all their songs. They call the much-invoked Indra to slay Vritra in battles and to be the conqueror in contests. He is asked to guard the most potent Soma, and the rishi chooses for himself the Indra powers present among the five peoples. Indra is to come from near and from far.
अ॒र्वा॒चीनं॒ सु ते॒ मन॑ उ॒त चक्षु॑ः शतक्रतो ।
इन्द्र॑ कृ॒ण्वन्तु॑ वा॒घत॑ः
arvācīnaṃ su te mana uta cakṣuḥ śatakrato |
indra kṛṇvantu vāghataḥ
नामा॑नि ते शतक्रतो॒ विश्वा॑भिर्गी॒र्भिरी॑महे ।
इन्द्रा॑भिमाति॒षाह्ये॑
nāmāni te śatakrato viśvābhirgīrbhirīmahe |
indrābhimātiṣāhye
पु॒रु॒ष्टु॒तस्य॒ धाम॑भिः श॒तेन॑ महयामसि ।
इन्द्र॑स्य चर्षणी॒धृत॑ः
puruṣṭutasya dhāmabhiḥ śatena mahayāmasi |
indrasya carṣaṇīdhṛtaḥ
इन्द्रं॑ वृ॒त्राय॒ हन्त॑वे पुरुहू॒तमुप॑ ब्रुवे ।
भरे॑षु॒ वाज॑सातये
indraṃ vṛtrāya hantave puruhūtamupa bruve |
bhareṣu vājasātaye
वाजे॑षु सास॒हिर्भ॑व॒ त्वामी॑महे शतक्रतो ।
इन्द्र॑ वृ॒त्राय॒ हन्त॑वे
vājeṣu sāsahirbhava tvāmīmahe śatakrato |
indra vṛtrāya hantave
द्यु॒म्नेषु॑ पृत॒नाज्ये॑ पृत्सु॒तूर्षु॒ श्रव॑स्सु च ।
इन्द्र॒ साक्ष्वा॒भिमा॑तिषु
dyumneṣu pṛtanājye pṛtsutūrṣu śravassu ca |
indra sākṣvābhimātiṣu
शु॒ष्मिन्त॑मं न ऊ॒तये॑ द्यु॒म्निनं॑ पाहि॒ जागृ॑विम् ।
इन्द्र॒ सोमं॑ शतक्रतो
śuṣmintamaṃ na ūtaye dyumninaṃ pāhi jāgṛvim |
indra somaṃ śatakrato
इ॒न्द्रि॒याणि॑ शतक्रतो॒ या ते॒ जने॑षु प॒ञ्चसु॑ ।
इन्द्र॒ तानि॑ त॒ आ वृ॑णे
indriyāṇi śatakrato yā te janeṣu pañcasu |
indra tāni ta ā vṛṇe
अग॑न्निन्द्र॒ श्रवो॑ बृ॒हद्द्यु॒म्नं द॑धिष्व दु॒ष्टर॑म् ।
उत्ते॒ शुष्मं॑ तिरामसि
agannindra śravo bṛhaddyumnaṃ dadhiṣva duṣṭaram |
utte śuṣmaṃ tirāmasi
अ॒र्वा॒वतो॑ न॒ आ ग॒ह्यथो॑ शक्र परा॒वत॑ः ।
उ॒ लो॒को यस्ते॑ अद्रिव॒ इन्द्रे॒ह तत॒ आ ग॑हि
arvāvato na ā gahyatho śakra parāvataḥ |
