Agni, sovereign of the peoples
A short hymn of Vishvamitra to Agni in the ushnik metre. The thoughtful kindle Agni as samraj, sovereign of the peoples, at the rite, and call him ritvij and hotar. He is the guardian of rita who shines in his own house. Whoever gives him fuel gains heroic strength and prospers. Agni, banner of the rites, comes with the devas, anointed by the seven hotars, to the one who offers. The singers bring an ancient, great word to him who bears the lights of the poets. Wakeful priests kindle the immortal carrier of offerings; the rishi asks for brilliance, heroes and nearness for welfare.
त्वां य॒ज्ञेष्वृ॒त्विज॒मग्ने॒ होता॑रमीळते ।
गो॒पा ऋ॒तस्य॑ दीदिहि॒ स्वे दमे॑
tvāṃ yajñeṣvṛtvijamagne hotāramīḻate |
gopā ṛtasya dīdihi sve dame
स घा॒ यस्ते॒ ददा॑शति स॒मिधा॑ जा॒तवे॑दसे ।
सो अ॑ग्ने धत्ते सु॒वीर्यं॒ स पु॑ष्यति
sa ghā yaste dadāśati samidhā jātavedase |
so agne dhatte suvīryaṃ sa puṣyati
स के॒तुर॑ध्व॒राणा॑म॒ग्निर्दे॒वेभि॒रा ग॑मत् ।
अ॒ञ्जा॒नः स॒प्त होतृ॑भिर्ह॒विष्म॑ते
sa keturadhvarāṇāmagnirdevebhirā gamat |
añjānaḥ sapta hotṛbhirhaviṣmate
प्र होत्रे॑ पू॒र्व्यं वचो॒ऽग्नये॑ भरता बृ॒हत् ।
वि॒पां ज्योतीं॑षि॒ बिभ्र॑ते॒ न वे॒धसे॑
pra hotre pūrvyaṃ vaco'gnaye bharatā bṛhat |
vipāṃ jyotīṃṣi bibhrate na vedhase
अ॒ग्निं व॑र्धन्तु नो॒ गिरो॒ यतो॒ जाय॑त उ॒क्थ्य॑ः ।
म॒हे वाजा॑य॒ द्रवि॑णाय दर्श॒तः
agniṃ vardhantu no giro yato jāyata ukthyaḥ |
mahe vājāya draviṇāya darśataḥ
अग्ने॒ यजि॑ष्ठो अध्व॒रे दे॒वान्दे॑वय॒ते य॑ज ।
होता॑ म॒न्द्रो वि रा॑ज॒स्यति॒ स्रिध॑ः

bhavā stotṛbhyo antamaḥ svastaye
तं त्वा॒ विप्रा॑ विप॒न्यवो॑ जागृ॒वांस॒ः समि॑न्धते ।
ह॒व्य॒वाह॒मम॑र्त्यं सहो॒वृध॑म्
taṃ tvā viprā vipanyavo jāgṛvāṃsaḥ samindhate |
