The first rules of prosody

Suta bows to Vasudeva, to his guru, to Ganesha, to Shambhu and to Sarasvati, and begins the science of metre for those of small learning, by the measure of syllables and of morae. He names the eight triads of syllables, the ganas called m, n, bh, y, j, r, s and t, each fixed by where its heavy syllable falls. A syllable is guru, heavy, when it is long, when it ends in a consonant, visarga or anusvara, or stands before a conjunct; at the end of a line it may count as heavy either way. Yati is the pause. A pada is a quarter of a verse. Verses are of three kinds: sama, with all quarters alike; ardhasama, with alternate quarters alike; and vishama, with all quarters different.
