What happens in this chapter The Devi rises from the gods' fury For a hundred years the devas fought the asuras under Mahishasura, and Mahisha took Indra's throne. The defeated devas go to Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu. Hearing of the wrong, the three blaze with anger, and from their faces and the bodies of all the devas pours a great light that gathers into the form of a woman. Each deva gives her a weapon: Shiva his trident, Vishnu his discus, Varuna his conch, Agni his spear, Indra his thunderbolt, and Himavan a lion to ride. Her laugh shakes the earth. Mahisha's generals Chikshura, Chamara and many more come against her with vast armies. The Devi fights from her lion, and the ganas born from her breath join her. The army is cut down, and the devas rain flowers.

tiṣṭha tiṣṭheti bhāṣanto devīmanye mahāsurāḥ | rudhiraughaviluptāṅgāḥ saṃgrāme lomaharṣaṇe
Other great asuras, their limbs drenched in streams of blood, shouted 'Stop, stop!' at the Devi in that hair-raising battle.
pātitai rathanāgāśvairasuraiśca vasundharā | agamyā sābhavat tatra yatrābhūt sa mahāraṇaḥ
Where that great battle raged, the earth became impassable, strewn with fallen chariots, elephants, horses and asuras.
śoṇitaughā mahānadyaḥ sadyastatra visustruvuḥ | madhye cāsurasainyasya vāraṇāsuravājinām
Great rivers of blood at once flowed there, through the midst of the asura army, among its elephants, asuras and horses.
kṣaṇena tanmahāsainyamasurāṇāṃ tathāmbikā | ninye kṣayaṃ yathā vahnistṛṇadārumahācayam
In a moment Ambika destroyed that vast asura army, as fire consumes a great heap of straw and wood.
sa ca siṃho mahānādamutsṛjan dhutakesaraḥ | śarīrebhyo'marārīṇāmasūniva vicinvati
And the lion, shaking his mane and roaring loudly, seemed to be searching out the very life-breaths from the bodies of the devas' enemies.
devyā gaṇaiśca taistatra kṛtaṃ yuddhaṃ tathāsuraiḥ | yathaiṣāṃ tutuṣurdevāḥ puṣpavṛṣṭimuco divi
So the Devi and her ganas fought the asuras there, in such a way that the devas in heaven were delighted and rained down flowers.
