Meaning
Now may the God who is the Self of the universe be pleased with this offering of words, and, pleased, grant me this gift of grace.
May the crookedness of the wicked fall away, and may their love of good deeds grow. May friendship bind all beings to one another.
May the darkness of sin vanish. May the world see by the sun of its own dharma. May every living being obtain whatever it longs for.
May hosts of those devoted to God, raining every kind of blessing, meet the creatures of the earth without end.
They are walking groves of wish-fulfilling trees, living villages of wish-granting gems, speaking oceans of nectar.
They are moons without a stain, suns without scorching heat: may such good people always be kin to all.
In short, may all the three worlds be full and happy, and worship the Primal Being without a break.
And may those who live by this book win in this world and the next.
Here the Lord of the universe, Shri Nivrittinath, said: “This gift will be granted.” With this boon Jnanadeva became happy.
About this bhajan
When Sant Jnaneshwar finished his Marathi commentary on the Bhagavad Gita at Newasa in 1290, he did not ask anything for himself. These nine ovis, the last of the Jnaneshwari’s eighteenth chapter, ask for the wicked to lose their wickedness rather than be destroyed, for friendship among all beings, and for every creature to have what it longs for. He was not yet sixteen. Every Varkari kirtan and bhajan in Maharashtra ends with the Pasaydan, and many schools sing it each morning.
Jnaneshwari, adhyaya 18, closing ovis (checked against Marathi Wikisource; spelling follows the commonly printed reading)
