Meaning
Om, victory to you, Lord of the universe, Hari; victory, Master, to you, Lord of the universe. In a moment you remove the troubles of your devotees and servants.
Whoever meditates on you receives the fruit; the mind’s sorrow is destroyed. Happiness and prosperity come into the home, and the body’s pain is removed.
You are my mother and father; in whom else should I take refuge? Without you there is no other in whom I could place my hope.
You are the complete Supreme Self, the knower of all hearts; Parabrahman, the Supreme Lord, the master of all.
You are the ocean of compassion and the protector of all. I am foolish, wicked and full of desire: be gracious to me, my sustainer.
You are the One, beyond the senses, the Lord of every life. How can I, of poor understanding, reach you, O merciful one?
Friend of the humble, remover of sorrow, you are my Lord. Lift your hand to me; I lie at your door.
Remove my cravings and faults, take away my sins, O God. Increase my faith and devotion and my service of the saints.
About this bhajan
The aarti sung in more Hindu homes than any other was written about 1870 by Pandit Shardha Ram Phillauri of Phillaur in Punjab, a kathavachak, Sanskrit scholar and early writer of Hindi prose (his novel “Bhagyavati” appeared in 1877). Many read his signature in the word “shraddha” in the last stanza. Its Hindi is plain, its tune easy, and families end almost every puja, katha and festival with it, from Satyanarayan katha to Diwali. The text follows Kavita Kosh.
